Freeway Clyde is an electric, omni-genre, seven-piece ensemble that creates something fresh — soundtracks for films that have never been made. The band spins poignant folk-rooted themes into a universe of collective improvisation and vast soundscape. Vintage synthesizers, electric strings, trumpet, viola and deep rhythm combine for a timeless sound, from velvet to furious.

Adventurous instrumentals served up with lyrical melodies and emotional heft – Freeway Clyde seals Chorney’s status as one of the most intriguing musicians, composers and bandleaders in the Green Mountain State.” Times-Argus

Sadie Brightman, pianist, opens the show playing Matt LaRocca's Freeway Clyde arrangements for piano.

A Tony Award-winning composer and arranger, Michael Chorney is one of Vermont’s most prolific and collaborative artists. After working for years on the score for the Broadway hit, Hadestown, he longed to develop a collective, ensemble approach to music making. He found it back in Vermont and put together a group of the region's most intuitive players. Freeway Clyde took off.

Michael Chorney is a musician from Lincoln Vermont. He has worked as a composer, bandleader, librarian, orchestrator, assembly line worker, arranger, dance accompanist, carpenter, engineer, teacher and sideman. His work spans genre, from avant-garde prepared guitar pieces to arrangements of Paul Bowles, Kurt Weill and Sun Ra. He is the recipient of the 2024 Lockwood Prize for artistic excellence.
